Description: Cumberland Gap National Historical Park covers 20,305 acres in KY, VA and TN; second largest historical park in the nation. The "Gap" is an 800-ft-deep natural break in the Cumberland Mountains. Indians passed through on a trail called Warriors Path; later pioneers led by Daniel Boone marked out the trail that became the Wilderness Road. More than 300,000 pioneers traveled the "Gateway to the West" between 1775 and 1810.

Description: Henderson Settlement is located on KY 190 off U.S. Hwy. 25E, 18 miles SW of Pineville. A United Methodist Mission founded 1925, this 1,300-acre mission includes a church, demonstration farm, greenhouse, orchards, garden, hiking trail, gymnasium, recreational ball fields, basketball court, tennis court, volleyball court and swimming pool. Dining hall with food service for 15 or more. Converted guest houses for reunions and groups up to 60. Current programs include farm production, community development, social work, early childhood development, youth work, study camps, and day care services. Free tours of working mission by appointment. Craft shop offers variety of handmade mountain/country crafts, quilts.

Hensley Settlement

Description: Hensley Settlement is part of Cumberland Gap National Historic Park. The preserved settlement is located atop Brush Mountain where the Hensley's first settled in 1903. In the early part of the century, the Hensley settlers elected to remain on the mountain forsaking settled areas for an entire self sufficient way of life. The mountain farmstead community has restored houses, barns, fences, schoolhouse and cemetery. If you go on the tour be sure to wear walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
Open: April-October for tours by appointment.

Description: Kentucky Ridge State Forest is 5 miles southwest of Pineville. It is Kentucky's second largest state forest with 11,363 acres in Bell County; adjoins Pine Mountain State Resort Park with recreational and lodging facilities close by. Excellent for hunting and rugged back country hiking; many scenic overlooks; fire trails provide limited access to interior of area, mountainous terrain, primarily forested; squirrel grouse; Kentucky Division of Forestry.
